Born in Toronto Ontario, Jen Pepper is an installation artist who lives in Central New York. She has exhibited nationally and internationally in 21 solo exhibitions to date and has participated in over 50 group exhibitions since 1990. Her work has been seen in international and national venues including the UK, Japan, Canada, New York City and other gallery and museums throughout the USA. In 2008 her work was included in The Astraea Visual Art fellows’ panel sponsored by The Sackler Center for Feminist Art at the Brooklyn Museum of Art in NYC. She was the guest curator at The Schweinfurth Memorial Art Center in Auburn, NY for the exhibition “Made in NY 2008.” Pepper was invited to participate in “The Object + Beyond” at The Everson Biennial 2008 exhibition at the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse, NY, “Sculpture: Carved, Cast + Constructed” a group exhibition of nine artists at The Schweinfurth Memorial Art Center in Auburn, NY and Saltonstall Fellows at The Herbert F. Johnson Museum, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY in 2006. She was an invited artist to participate in the international site specific installations created for the city of Sumter, SC; “Buoyancy of Place” in 2004 and “The Finger Poets,” in 2003. Pepper has been the recipient of granted awards including The National Endowment for the Humanities, New York State Council on the Arts, New York State Foundation for the Arts, Astraea National Visual Artist fellow (NYC) and The Constance Saltonstall Foundation for the Arts. She has been an invited artist in residence to Fundación Casa Museo SOLAINA DE PILOÑO, Galicia, SPAIN (2008), Art Colony Galichnik (2006) in the Republic of Macedonia, Foundation Valparaiso, Spain (2003), The Constance Saltonstall Foundation for the Arts (2004 + 2003), The Virginia Center for the Creative Arts (2002), Anam Cara Artists Colony, Co. Cork, Ireland (2001), The Corporation of Yaddo (2000), Sculpture Space, Inc., (1997), Millay Colony for the Arts (1995), in New York State. Her work is included in the Flatfiles at Pierogi Gallery in Brooklyn, NY. Her work is in the collections including: The Paul J. Schupf Collection, Hamilton, NY, Mala Stanica (National Gallery of Macedonia), Foundation Valparaiso, (Alermia Spain), Casa Museo Solaina de PiloÑo, (Galicia, Spain), Sue Booth Forbes, West Cork (Ireland), Peggy + Booth Chilcutt, (USA), among other CAN + USA private collections.
Pepper has been a guest speaker at many conferences including: 2007 Women’s Studies Annual conference sponsored by Middle Tennessee State University authoring a paper titled: The Latent Image: Performing Identity and delivered to 16th Annual Women’s Studies Conference at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY. She has been a guest panelist at the 2005 14th Annual Women’s Studies Conference meetings presenting the paper: Digital Flickerings + Femme Technology, in 2003 she authored and presented a paper on Postmodern Gender Aesthetics at The Western Social Science annual conference in Las Vegas, NV. And in 2001 to American Society for Aesthetics annual meetings in Minneapolis, MN authoring the paper How Feminist Aesthetics has Affected the Arts.
An associate professor of art at Cazenovia College in New York, Pepper has also served as gallery director since 2005. She holds a BFA from The Maryland Institute College of Art, 1987 and an MFA from The University of Connecticut, 1989.
